VANNUCCI ARTIST RESIDENCY, 2026

Deighton Family Foundation, Città della Pieve, Umbria, Italy

Spring 2026

During the spring of 2026, I was invited to the Vannucci Artist Residency in Città della Pieve, Umbria, supported by the Deighton Family Foundation. Working within a landscape shaped by centuries of painting, agriculture, ritual, and daily repetition, I found myself slowing down and listening differently to the images that were emerging in the studio. The works made during this period marked a new threshold in my practice. Blue apparitions, thorned architectures, animal forms, and angelic or insect-like presences began surfacing as if they had lives of their own, collapsing distinctions between body, landscape, symbol, and system.

I have come to think of these paintings not as scenes, but as events: records of pressure where memory, belief, beauty, violence, and transformation compress into a single field. Built through cycles of construction, erasure, and return, the surfaces behave like palimpsests, carrying traces of both the place in which they were made and the psychological terrain from which they emerged.

Umbria did not provide subjects so much as a condition of attention - one in which time expanded, the noise of daily life receded, and the work could move more fully toward its own internal logic.
